‘F1: The Movie’ receives 4 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture
F1: The Movie, the fictional look at Formula 1 starring Brad Pitt as veteran driver Sonny Hayes and produced in part by seven-time Drivers’ Champion Lewis Hamilton, secured four Oscar nominations on Thursday, including a nomination for Best Picture.
The film stars Pitt as Hayes, a driver once hailed as the next biggest thing in the sport, making a return to the grid later in life to drive alongside rookie Joshua Pierce, portrayed by Damson Idris. Hayes is recruited by his former teammate Rubén Cervantes, played by Javier Bardem, who is now the team owner of the fictional APXGP. Cervantes needs to deliver a Grand Prix victory before the season ends, or he will be forced to sell the team.
The movie, which was shot over the course of several F1 seasons at race tracks around the world, featured current drivers alongside the film’s stars. For example, Max Verstappen, George Russell, and Charles Leclerc appear in moments throughout the film. Hamilton plays a prominent role, particularly in the movie’s final climactic sequence.
In addition to the Best Picture nomination, F1: The Movie secured nods in Visual Effects, Sound, and Film Editing:
F1: The Movie was one of ten nominees for Best Picture. For the 2022 Academy Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences officially changed the nomination process to guarantee that ten films would be honored in this category.
Sinners secured a record 16 nominations, including for Best Picture.
The 2026 Academy Awards are set for March 15.
