Australia vs Egypt: Under 2.5 goals

Anyone hoping for a goalfest when Australia take on Egypt in the round of 32 will probably be disappointed.

Neither team is what you would term ‘free scoring’. True, Egypt are not as defence-minded as they were under some of Hossam Hassan’s predecessors, but no one would be surprised to see them revert to type now we are into the knockout stage.

There were under 2.5 goals in two of Egypt’s three group games, and the likely absence through injury of Mohamed Salah makes their attack less dangerous.

Australia’s three group games contained a grand total of four goals. They delivered a defensive masterclass in the 2-0 victory over Turkey, but that was the only match the Socceroos scored in.

Both teams, you feel, would prefer to play without the ball here. Egypt will probably end up shading the possession, but clear-cut chances will be few and far between. A cagey contest awaits.

Argentina vs Cape Verde: Argentina to score in both halves

One of only three teams with a 100 percent record at this World Cup at the time of writing, Argentina are not about to give up their title without a fight.

Lionel Messi rolled back the years in the group phase as the defending champions beat Algeria, Austria and Jordan without ever having to hit top gear.

Not much has changed for Argentina since their triumph in 2022, and the last couple of weeks suggest that is a positive rather than a negative.

Next up for Messi and co. is a meeting with Cape Verde, the last debutants still standing this summer.

The Blue Sharks went unbeaten in the group stage, drawing all three matches to advance to the last 32 in second place. They are the only team in World Cup history to have never suffered defeat.

Unfortunately for Cape Verde, their defence will struggle to stand up to this Argentina attack.

👾 Best AI prediction: BTTS – No

Paraguay vs France: France -1 handicap

Plenty could change between now and July 19, but France look like the team to beat as things stand.

A scintillating showing against Sweden last time out earned Didier Deschamps’ side a 3-0 win, sending them through to the round of 16.

If France’s most recent encounter was pretty comfortable for them, Paraguay’s last-32 tie was anything but.

Gustavo Alfaro’s men had to battle for more than two hours before they finally triumphed over Germany on penalties following a 1-1 draw. It was the greatest result in the history of the national team.

Halting this France side is a much tougher proposition, especially as the Germany game will have taken a lot out of Paraguay.

Kylian Mbappe, Michael Olise, Ousmane Dembele and friends should win this one without too many problems.

Canada vs Morocco: Morocco to win

Canada opened up the round of 32 against South Africa and they are involved in the first last-16 tie too.

Jesse Marsch’s men were worthy winners in that 1-0 victory over Bafana Bafana, although it took them until second-half stoppage time to finally break their opponents’ resistance.

As for Morocco, they required a penalty shoot-out to get past the Netherlands, although Mohamed Ouahbi’s men were the better team in general play.

Remarkably, Morocco have now gone 32 matches without defeat – and their last loss came in the African Nations Championship, a tournament reserved for players who ply their trade in Africa.

With the game taking place in Houston, there is no home advantage for Canada despite their status as co-hosts. This will probably prove one game too far for Marsch’s team.

👾 Best AI prediction: Canada to score

Brazil vs Norway: Both teams to score

Brazil vs Norway is one of the standout fixtures in the round of 16. Brazil are the favourites to advance, but Norway are dangerous opponents for the Selecao.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side left it late to see off Japan last time out, but they recovered well from a poor first half to win 2-1.

Gabriel Martinelli was the hero with his late winner, coming off the bench in another showcase of Brazil’s attacking depth, yet there is plenty of room for improvement elsewhere in the team.

Norway edged out Ivory Coast last time out, with Erling Haaland scoring the game’s third goal to give his nation a 2-1 victory.

Both these sides have scored in every game they have contested so far at this World Cup. Norway have now found the back of the net in 22 of their last 23 matches, while Brazil have not drawn a blank in their last 12 fixtures.
