Ex-Cowboys coach gets emotional after Marshawn Kneeland question

The memory of former Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland continues to resonate throughout the organization and among coaches who worked closely with him.

During Wednesday’s media session, Tennessee Titans defensive line coach Aaron Whitecotton, who previously served as Dallas’ defensive line coach, became emotional when asked about Kneeland. Whitecotton wore a No. 94 pin in honor of the late defender and choked up while recounting the player’s impact.

“I miss Marshawn every day,” Whitecotton said. “I love him. I’m really thankful that we have his baby boy to carry on his legacy. Because Marshawn was a special guy, man. He was a special guy to me.”

Kneeland died by suicide in November 2025 at the age of 24 after spending two seasons with the Cowboys. His death continues to affect teammates, coaches, and others who knew him throughout the organization.

Whitecotton’s connection with Kneeland went beyond football. Although the coach spent only one season in Dallas, Kneeland left a lasting impression on him. Whitecotton previously honored the defensive end by wearing his jersey before a Cowboys game.

Dallas has continued to recognize Kneeland’s legacy. The organization recently installed a tribute in the team locker room and shared news regarding the birth of his son. Makhai Kneeland was born on June 11. His mother, Catalina Mancera, was pregnant when Kneeland passed away.

Kneeland was widely respected for the way he treated people, according to those who knew him. Friends, teammates, and coaches frequently described him as a caring individual, and “One Love” was known as his personal motto.

Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer also stated that the organization intends to support both Kneeland’s son and Mancera moving forward. More than seven months after his passing, the grief remains evident, with Whitecotton’s emotional remarks speaking to the depth of Kneeland’s influence on those around him.
