Everton v Sunderland prediction

Everton head into their final home game of the campaign still very much in a battle to qualify for European football next season.

David Moyes’ side currently sit 10th in the Premier League table, four points behind seventh place in what is currently the final European slot, however that Conference League position could easily drop down to eighth, or even ninth, depending on the results of Saturday’s FA Cup final and Wednesday’s Europa League final.

The Toffees head into the penultime weekend of the Premier League season just two points behind eighth placed Brentford and level on points with ninth placed Chelsea.

The Merseyside club will need to get back to winning ways over the next two weeks to stand any chance of competing in Europe next season for the first time since 2017.

Moyes’ men are currently winless in their last five matches, and don’t have the strongest of home records in their first season in their new home, with just two wins in their last 11 matches at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, albeit both those victories have come in their last four.

Sunderland make the trip to Merseyside sat two places but only one point behind their opponents on Sunday afternoon, still with their faint hopes of their own European adventure next season, which would be just their second in their history and their first since 1973.

Regis le Bris’ side have also gone longer than they would like without tasting victory, their most recent win coming five matches ago, but after a wobble of conceding nine goals in two games following that, having since managed to pick up points in each of their last two games.

Regardless of where the Black Cats finish this season, the campaign will no doubt go down as a resounding success following their promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs last season, with so many outside Wearside expecting an instant relegation back to the second tier.

Only Leeds and the already relegated duo of Burnley and Wolves have won fewer matches away from home this season than Sunderland, however two of those four victories have come in their last four matches on the road, with the Black Cats suffering only one defeat from their last five games in front of their travelling support.

Everton are unbeaten in their last five matches against Sunderland in normal time, but did lose on penalties to the Wearside club earlier this season in the third round of the FA Cup after a 1-1 draw at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

With both teams struggling for wins of late, and having drawn each of their last two games, it’s difficult to see another other than a continuation of that trend and a third consecutive stalemate between the two teams on Sunday – a 1-1 scoreline looking the most likely.

Everton v Sunderland betting tips

Stalemate streak continues

Sunday’s match will be the third between the two teams this season, with both of those previous meetings ending in stalemates after the 90 minute game.

Both teams head into this weekend’s fixture on Merseyside having struggled for wins in recent weeks, but have drawn each of their last two matches.

With European football on the line for both teams, Sunday could be a cagey affair, particularly with Everton’s home form and Sunderland’s away from lacking consistency all season.

Beto to find the net-o

No player on either team has scored as many goals this season as Beto, who is expected to lead Everton’s line on Sunday as the only member of either squad to have reached double figures for the campaign.

The Guinea-Bissau international bagged his 10th of the campaign in last weekend’s draw with Crystal Palace, his fifth goal in his last five outings.

Garner carded

No player on either team has received as many yellow cards this season as James Garner, the Everton midfielder having received his 12th caution of the campaign in last week’s Selhurst Park stalemate, which was also his fourth booking in his last five games.
