Aston Villa head into Wednesday night’s Europa League final as odds on favourites for victory in Istanbul, as the club bid for their first major trophy in 30 years.
Villa manager Unai Emery is the most successful coach in the history of the competition, having lifted the trophy on four separate occasions, most recently having done so with Villarreal in 2021.
The Villans make the trip to Turkey following an emphatic 4-2 win over Liverpool on Friday night, seeing them move up to fourth place in the Premier League table and guaranteeing their place in next season’s Champions League, regardless of Wednesday’s result.
Full attention can now go onto Wednesday night, without the worry the need to get a result against Manchester City on the final day of the Premier League season on Sunday afternoon.
The West Midlands side have been a dominant force in this season’s Europa League, finishing second of 36 in the league phase table with seven wins from their eight matches.
The knockout stage saw Villa dispatch each of Lille, Bologna and Nottingham Forest, overturning a first leg deficit to beat their Premier League rivals 4-0 in their home second leg of their semi final clash.
Wednesday night will be the club’s third European final following victories in both the European Cup and European Super Cup finals in 1982.
In contrast, Freiburg make the trip to Istanbul for the first ever European final and on the hunt for their first ever piece of major silverware.
Julian Schuster’s side head to Turkey having finished their domestic season with an emphatic 4-1 win over Leipzig on Saturday afternoon to ensure their seventh place finish in the Bundesliga, guaranteeing them a place in the Conference League qualifying rounds last season.
That will turn into a place in the Champions League league phase with victory on Wednesday though, which would signal the club’s first time ever competing at the top table of European football.
Prior to this season, the Breisgau Brazilians best perfomance in European competition was reaching the last 16 of the Europa League in the 2023 and 2024.
A seventh placed finish in the league phase table following five wins and only one defeat from their eight matches, followed by knockout stage victories over Genk, Celta Vigo and most recently Braga, in which they had to come back from a first leg deficit to book their ticket to Istanbul.
Freiburg have lost only one of their last four matches since their semi final first leg defeat to their Portuguese opposition, but have won only two of their last seven, albeit with those two coming in their last three matches.
Wednesday’s final will be the first ever meeting between the two sides, though Emery has come up against the German club before, winning 2-0 home and away in the group stage of this competition in 2013 with Sevilla en route to lifting the trophy for the first time.
After reaching the quarter finals of the Champions League last season and the semi finals of the Conference League the season before, can Aston Villa make it third time lucky in their quest for a first European trophy since 1982? Bet £10 on the match and get £40 in free bets with BOYLE Sports*.
