ESPN reveals stunning NHL TV record from Flyers-Penguins series

The Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins series had a lot of meaning for fans of the Pennsylvania rivalry and the ones who stuck around after their Stanley Cup Playoff battles in the early 2010s. While most of the players have come and gone, the Penguins still have the trio of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang attempting to beat their rivals one more time. The Flyers took an early 3-0 series lead, but that didn’t stop fans from tuning in, according to ESPN via X, formerly Twitter.

“This past Monday’s Philadelphia Flyers-Pittsburgh Penguins matchup delivered the most-viewed First Round #StanleyCup Playoffs Game 5 EVER on cable,” ESPN reported. “ESPN has aired the 3 most-viewed First Round games on cable ever (excl. Game 7’s).”

It isn’t hard to see why everyone tuned in for Game 5. The Penguins won Game 4 to extend the series, and hockey fans felt the possibility of something special happening with the Crosby-led squad. Pittsburgh needed to win Game 5 at home to put some pressure on Philadelphia, and did it with a near-perfect game.

It feels like hockey has been on a straight upward trajectory since the Olympics this year. More and more fans are tuning in and talking about it on social media, which is great for the sport’s future. While it still sits behind the other three big four North American sports, hockey diehards can dream of it one day reaching a level where it is mentioned in the same breath as some of the others. A competitive and physical first round of the playoffs is certainly helping.
