Dream star Rhyne Howard makes WNBA history with deep shot vs. Liberty

The Atlanta Dream are one of the top teams in the WNBA so far this season, but they are being put to the test on Thursday night in a WNBA Commissioner’s Cup game against the New York Liberty.

The Dream have a deep roster full of quality players, but Rhyne Howard has continued to be their rising star who carries a massive burden for the team. On Thursday night, she made some WNBA history that shows just how quickly she has become one of the best players in the game.

With a 3-pointer early in the first quarter against the Liberty, Howard became the fastest in WNBA history to get to 400 3-pointers made in her career.

Howard has been extremely efficient from beyond the arc both during her career and this season. In 2026, she is drilling over 37% of her attempts from out there while launching nearly nine of them per game, so opposing defenses have to be aware of her at all times. She is averaging nearly 18 points per game as a result of that.

In Howard’s career, she is making nearly three triples per game on just under 34% shooting from distance. Her efficiency this season from the outside is by far a career high, suggesting an improvement that may be here to stay.

While the Dream have struggled on offense on Thursday night against a very good New York defense, Howard hasn’t struggled to score. She has 15 points and four 3-pointers through less than three quarters, making her one of two Dream players in double figures.

Karl Smesko and company are going to need more where that came from if they are going to come back and beat the Liberty in this game, as New York has a 67-59 lead with just over a quarter to go thanks to a big night from Marine Johannes.

Regardless of Thursday’s result, Howard continues to prove that she is a star that the Dream can rely on to compete for championships. Her latest record is only more proof that she is here to stay.
