Diogo Jota’s children share heartwarming moment with Virgil van Dijk before Wolves match

Virgil van Dijk ensured that Diogo Jota’s children’s afternoon was extra special as Liverpool beat Wolves 2-1 at Anfield.

Tributes were paid to Jota as his two former clubs played against each other for the first time since his tragic death in July.

The Portugal international’s family were invited to the Premier League clash as special guests by Liverpool.

And as part of that, his children were given the opportunity to be mascots and walk out with captain Van Dijk.

Jota’s two sons, Dinis and Duarte, joined the Reds skipper as he entered the pitch before the match against Wolves.

His wife Rute Cardosos was watching on from the touchline as the emotional moment happened.

After the teams had emerged, Jota’s children then shook the hands of the Wolves players with the Liverpool squad.

They then joined Van Dijk for a kick-around in front of the Kop as fans sang ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ ahead of kick-off.

Supporters clapped as they approached the penalty area and the moment was filmed by someone in the stands.

Dinis and Duarte looked to be enjoying themselves kicking the ball, right in front of the goal that their dad scored in many times.

Liverpool and Van Dijk went on to enjoy their afternoons too, with the Reds taking a 2-0 lead into half time at Anfield.

Soon after the break though, Wolves managed to get a goal back to set up an interesting second half on Merseyside.

But the Reds held on for a valuable three points and their tenth win of the league campaign.

‘They will never be forgotten’

Van Dijk paid respects to teammate Jota in his programme notes ahead of Liverpool’s game against Wolves on Saturday.

“The loss of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva in July was something none of us could ever have prepared for, and something all of us are still coming to terms with,” he wrote.

“Our thoughts, as ever, remain with Diogo and Andre’s family. They will never, ever be forgotten, and we will carry their memory always.”

Jota and his brother Andre passed away on July 3 in a tragic car accident while driving in the Spanish province of Zamora.

Their car went off-road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking.

Jota was loved by the fanbases of Liverpool and Wolves, with them making incredible tributes following his death.

His No.20 shirt was retired by the Reds after his passing, while his name was entered into the Hall of Fame at Molineux too.
