Did Spurs’ De’Aaron Fox get fouled on boneheaded layup attempt?

On Sunday, the San Antonio Spurs suffered one of the worst collapses in recent sports history by blowing a 29-point lead in Game 4 of the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks. The Spurs now trail the series 3-1 and will be fighting for their season on Saturday night back at home.

Among the many mistakes the Spurs made down the stretch of this game was a brutal layup attempt from De’Aaron Fox with under 20 seconds left and San Antonio up one. Instead of holding onto the ball and waiting for the Knicks to foul, Fox went up for a shot, which was blocked by Anunoby, who then went on to score the winning basket on the other end.

However, now, a new angle has revealed that Anunoby got all of Fox’s wrist on the shot, and potentially should have been whistled for a foul.

As some users in the comment section pointed out, the contact with the wrist appeared to occur after Anunoby had already gotten a hand on the ball, meaning Fox was no longer in control of the ball by the time the contact occurred. However, with how inconsistent the NBA is with enforcing these rules in terms of when contact occurs, some Spurs fans may feel they have a legitimate gripe with this non-call.

Of course, the much easier solution would have been for Fox to simply dribble along the baseline and wait for the Knicks to foul, step up to the free-throw line, and put his team up by three points.

Instead, the Spurs now trail a series 3-1 that they legitimately could have swept had their late-game execution been just a tick better in Games 1, 2, and 4.

Now, San Antonio will need to show some mental toughness in order to salvage Game 5 at home.
