Cubs’ Craig Counsell sends brutally honest message to team after defeating Rockies

The Chicago Cubs earned an impressive 9-3 win against the Colorado Rockies on the road on Thursday. Colorado still won the series 2-1, however. After the game, Cubs manager Craig Counsell sent an honest message to the team while speaking to reporters, via Marquee Sports Network.

“I mean, you gotta play good every day,” Counsell said. “Today doesn’t promise you tomorrow, that’s how this works. You have to be consistent every single day.”

The Cubs’ injury concerns have been impossible to ignore. They have certainly played a role in the team’s underwhelming overall season. However, many players have underperformed as well. The Cubs know they need to be better.

Chicago improved to 35-34 overall with the victory. They are still in fourth place in the National League Central standings and 7.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for first place as of this story’s writing.

The ball club could still end up making a competitive run. Chicago is likely going to remain in the NL Wild Card conversation throughout the season at the very least. If the Cubs want to reach the postseason and make any serious noise in the playoffs, though, they need to be more consistent. Of course, making a trade or two before the deadline would not hurt matters.

For now, the team is hopeful that Counsell’s message will give them motivation. Chicago’s road trip will continue during the weekend against the San Francisco Giants. The first contest of the three-game series is scheduled for Friday night in San Francisco at 10:15 PM EST.
