Cowboys’ George Pickens still has not signed franchise tag after NFL Draft

When it comes to the Dallas Cowboys, you need to listen between the lines — even when it seems cut and dried. And though it was reported otherwise, the draft is over, and George Pickens has still not signed the franchise tag, according to a post on X by Todd Archer.

“George Pickens has not yet signed the franchise tag tender with the Cowboys.”

This seems to contradict a post on X by Ian Rapoport on April 23.

“George Pickens is signing his franchise tag, source say.”

Notice the “is” and the tense, which would imply the signing was happening at the time.

Cowboys Hall of Fame wide receiver said Pickens’ reported signing changed the draft, according to The White House with Michael Irvin via dallasnews.com.

“He was saying to the Cowboys: ‘Please, don’t draft another receiver,'” Irvin said on the show. “George took it off the table by signing the franchise tag. Make them do what Philly did by drafting the replacement for A.J. Brown while he’s still there.

“Why would George sign this? It’s not about conceding any point during the negotiation. If we’re truly negotiating, competing, but when we’re working together, things like this happen. Why would you concede? Because I’m telling you guys this is what I want to do and this is where I want to be.”

Uh, perhaps. So why hasn’t he signed?

With Pickens, the Cowboys are clearly Super Bowl material. They have arguably the NFL’s best offense. And they’ve used free agency and the draft to rebuild the defense. Without Pickens, they’re still a threat. But they may not have as many teeth in their bite.

It’s still likely this will get resolved soon. However, it’s Pickens. And it’s the Cowboys. So, there is still a chance this goes south.
