Chiefs’ Rashee Rice violates probation, ordered to serve 30 days in jail

The Kansas City Chiefs have had a busy offseason, adding Super Bowl MVP running back Kenneth Walker III, among other moves. The team has also been hoping for good behavior from wide receiver Rashee Rice, who was suspended for the opening portion of last season after his involvement in a hit-and-run incident in Texas two years ago.

On Tuesday, the team got a rough update regarding Rice’s probation status.

“#Chiefs WR Rashee Rice violated his probation after testing positive for marijuana (THC) and has been ordered to serve 30 days in jail,” reported Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team on X, formerly Twitter, citing a report from Matt Foster of KSHB 41 News. “He was booked this afternoon in Dallas County, Texas, and will be released from custody on June 16. That timeline means he’ll miss OTAs and minicamp.”

The incident involving Rice occurred in March of 2024, not long after the Chiefs won that year’s Super Bowl, and he was able to play the following season up until his injury while the legal process played out. Rice’s original sentence included jail time, restitution, and probation, but now, he will be getting another month behind bars for the failed drug test.

Rice was able to return last year after being suspended for the first six games of the season, and played mostly well, although the Chiefs still ended up missing the playoffs.

It remains to be seen if there will be additional punishment from the Chiefs or the NFL in the wake of the probation violation.
