Canadiens’ top prospect heading back to NCAA for 2026-27 season

As the NCAA Hockey season has come to a close, many players who had previously been drafted by NHL teams have signed contracts to join their new franchises. Some players, such as Porter Martone of the Philadelphia Flyers, have even made their NHL debuts after their college season. As the Montreal Canadiens get ready for their playoff push, their top prospect will not be joining them.

Canadiens’ top prospect, Michael Hage, will be returning for a third season at the University of Michigan, according to a statement by agent Pat Brisson.

“After discussing it with him and the Canadiens organization, we concluded that another year in college would be the best option for his development. He still needs to gain a bit more physical maturity. Additionally, he will have a leading role and leadership responsibilities next year, which will greatly help his progression before moving on to the next step within the Canadiens organization,” Brisson said.

Hage was the 21st overall selection of the 2024 NHL Draft by the Canadiens. In his freshman season at the University of Michigan, he found the back of the net 13 times while adding 24 assists. Hage improved in his second campaign with the Wolverines. He would once again light the lamp 13 times, but added 39 helpers as Michigan made it to the Frozen Four. The double overtime loss in the Frozen Four could have played a factor in his decision to return to school, according to hockey insider Elliotte Friedman.

“I think for Hage, there’s a few things here,” added Friedman. “No. 1, increased role at Michigan next year, even more than he had this year. No. 2, unfinished business; they just lost in the Frozen Four. No. 3, the possibility his brother (Alexander) could join the Wolverines and play there. So that was the decision he made.”

While the Habs will not have their top prospect joining them this year, they are still heading to the playoffs. The Canadiens are 47-23-10 on the season, good for third currently in the Atlantic Division. The team hits the ice next against the New York Islanders on Sunday night.
