Canadiens’ Mike Matheson remains defiant on ‘outside noise’ after Game 4 loss

The Montreal Canadiens have lost Game 4 of the 2026 Eastern Conference Finals on Wednesday night. The Carolina Hurricanes controlled play the entire game. It was a 4-0 loss for the Habs, but it arguably could have been worse. In saying this, defenseman Mike Matheson remains undeterred.

Matheson refused to listen to outside noise after his team lost Game 3. That game was much closer than Game 4, though. And with this latest loss, more people are beginning to count the Habs out. However, the veteran Canadiens defenseman showed concrete belief in his teammates on Wednesday night.

“I think if we had listened to everybody outside of this locker room the last year and a half we wouldn’t have made the playoffs last year and we definitely wouldn’t be in the conference finals right now. So I don’t think we’re going to start listening,” Matheson said, via Sportsnet’s Eric Engels.

The Canadiens have been resilient throughout these playoffs. Montreal needed seven games to defeat both the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Buffalo Sabres. Having belief in this sort of group is certainly warranted, given their track record.

At the same time, it’s clear things need to change, and in a hurry. The Canadiens, for instance, have had trouble generating shots, let alone scoring chances. Montreal has been held to fewer than 20 shots in each of the last three games.

The Canadiens have shown promise on the road. And their best performance of this series came on the road in Game 1. Perhaps they can channel that when they take the ice in Raleigh, North Carolina on Friday night for a do-or-die Game 5.
