Backed by home support, Canada arrive as slight favourites to make a winning start to their tournament. The hosts have enjoyed a strong run of form ahead of their maiden home World Cup, suffering just one defeat in their last 17 matches across all competitions, excluding penalty shoot-outs.

The Canucks are unbeaten in seven outings, although five of those contests have finished level, highlighting their resilience if not always their cutting edge.

Led by former Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch, Canada secured their place at this summer’s tournament as far back as February 2023. As co-hosts, they have spent much of the past year playing friendlies, following their quarter-final elimination from last summer’s Gold Cup.

Since the start of 2026, Marsch’s side have taken part in four warm-up matches. A victory over Uzbekistan last week was sandwiched between draws against Iceland, Tunisia and the Republic of Ireland as they fine-tuned preparations for the tournament.

Bosnia, meanwhile, produced one of the most remarkable qualification stories in recent World Cup history. The Dragons booked their place in North America by defeating four-time world champions Italy on penalties in March’s play-off final.

That dramatic triumph followed another shoot-out success just days earlier, when Bosnia overcame Wales in Cardiff to reach the final.

Under Sergej Barbarez, who took charge in April 2024 in his first managerial role, Bosnia have become a difficult side to beat. They have lost only twice in their last 15 matches and head into the World Cup unbeaten in eight, although six of those games ended level after 90 minutes.

Having qualified for only their second World Cup as an independent nation following their debut appearance in Brazil in 2014, Bosnia have played two friendlies since sealing qualification. A goalless draw against North Macedonia in their farewell match at home was followed by a 1-1 draw with Panama after arriving in North America.

Canada are still searching for their first World Cup victory, having lost all six matches across their previous appearances in 1986 and 2022. However, with home advantage and momentum on their side, Friday’s opener represents an ideal opportunity to finally break that duck.

Don’t forget to make use of talkSPORT’s EXCLUSIVE sign up offer with SBK, where new customer can get £50 in free bets when they bet £20 on the World Cup.
