Buccaneers former 1st-round draft pick retires after 5 seasons

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers won Super Bowl LV over the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021. The championship not only confirmed Tom Brady’s status as the greatest NFL player ever, but it showed that the quarterback who had just completed his first year away from the New England Patriots still had plenty left in the tank.

Of course, though, the signal caller who was well into his 40s by that point needed more help for seasons to come. Unfortunately, though, the Buccaneers weren’t able to add much more punch to their roster, and that played a part in Super Bowl LV being Brady’s final championship.

The Buccaneers particularly fell short in the 2021 NFL Draft. For example, they drafted Brady’s heir apparent in the second round, but Kyle Trask never amounted to anything. In fact, Trask never started a single game for the Buccaneers. They failed horribly with their first-round selection, too. With pick 32, Tampa Bay drafted Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, an edge rusher from Washington.

The defensive end showed some serious pass rushing potential in college, but he was also very raw as a prospect. Tryon-Shoyinka never lived up to his draft status in Tampa Bay. He accumulated 15 sacks over four seasons before playing for the Cleveland Browns and Chicago Bears last season.

The Washington product signed a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles on March 30, but the pass rusher was just put on the reserve/retired list, effectively ending his career. Tryon-Shoyinka was the only veteran no-show at Eagles’ mandatory minicamp, and no explanation for his absence was provided. Now, his career is coming to a close, just a half-decade after he was taken in round one.
