Browns’ Todd Monken takes free shot at Deshaun Watson’s contract, even while complimenting him

The Cleveland Browns are set to have a quarterback battle in camp, and it could look a little different than it did last season. This time around, Deshaun Watson is putting his name in the ballot, and many think that he has the lead so far for the starting quarterback position.

Head coach Todd Monken appreciates Watson working hard despite the monetary success that he’s had throughout his career.

“He’s made plenty of money. I think we all know that. He’s had plenty of success and has had disappointments in his career. A number of things he couldn’t control from an injury standpoint. But to come back and want to battle, want to further his career, and change the narrative, I think that’s really cool,” Monken said.

Watson has definitely had his fair share of money since being with the Browns when he signed a huge contract with them years ago, but after that, things did not seem to go his way. He was suspended at a point, and then he suffered back-to-back Achilles injuries.

Now, Watson is back at full strength and is ready to compete for the starting job. He’ll be going up against Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel, two quarterbacks who started a few games for the Browns last season.

Moken offered an update on the quarterback battle, and it seems like he’s still analyzing who has the lead.

“Nothing’s really changed. We’re gonna rotate those guys and play the best player. We’ll see,” Monken said.

Before the injuries and issues outside of football, Watson was one of the up-and-coming quarterbacks in the league. Unfortunately, that was years ago, and it’s uncertain if he still has some of that juice left in him. If he can get back to that level, he should be in the lead for the starting position.
