Brendan Sorsby’s agent destroys Cincinnati for turning blind eye to gambling addiction
Brendan Sorsby transferred from Cincinnati to Texas Tech this offseason, with the expectation of being the starting quarterback for the Red Raiders in 2026. That all fell apart when Sorsby entered a treatment center for gambling addiction, and he has since made his intentions to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft known. His former coach, Scott Satterfield, recently broke his silence about the gambling scandal surrounding his former player.
Now, Sorsby’s agent is placing the blame for the situation squarely on Cincinnati, not Texas Tech, according to Griffin McVeigh of On3.
“If anybody should be questioned or catching heat, it should be Cincinnati,” Sorsby’s agent, Ron Slavin, said. “Because they knew for two years and never said anything or didn’t do anything about it. That’s the part of the story that gets lost.”
Sorsby initially committed to play at Indiana, being part of the program in 2022 and 2023. At that time, he bet on Indiana games, among other events. He then transferred to Cincinnati ahead of the 2024 season. He was the starting quarterback for 24 games in two seasons and had a strong 2025 campaign. This led to Sorsby entering the transfer portal once again, this time heading to Texas Tech.
“The people at Tech have been great, very supportive,” Slavin said. “Joey McGuire, I think, is one of the best human beings on the planet. A lot of head coaches are transactional. He is not. They didn’t do anything wrong here.”
While Sorsby has closed the book on his college career, the NFL still needs to approve his move to the supplemental draft, as Adam Schefter of ESPN has noted.
“He could say he plans to be in the supplemental draft, but the NFL still has to sign off on a supplemental draft, and that decision is up to the commissioner,” ESPN’s Adam Schefter said appearing on The Pat McAfee Show. “It is within his jurisdiction to decide whether or not there would be a supplemental draft this year. If there is a supplemental draft this year, it likely would be held in the back half of July, and then we’d see which of these teams, as you mentioned in that tier system, would wind up picking Brendan Sorsby.”
While there could be some worry about Sorsby’s gambling addiction, there is no doubt he can play the position. This has led some teams, such as the Pittsburgh Steelers, to be interested in taking a chance on the quarterback.
