Brendan Sorsby gets immediate offer after door slammed shut on NFL dream

The NFL has confirmed it won’t hold a supplemental draft this year, but as one door closes for Brendan Sorsby, another has opened.

College quarterback Sorsby, who was said to be a target for the Cleveland Browns, applied for the summer draft three business days before the June 22 deadline, but the league wrote in an open letter published Tuesday that it had no plans to hold one prior to his request.

The NFL ultimately decided that his petition ‘does not provide a basis’ for altering plans, and was submitted ‘without any supporting information or documentation, and only after abandoning recent litigation efforts to avoid NCAA sanctions.’

Therefore Sorsby, a former Indiana and Cincinnati signal caller who transferred to Texas Tech six months ago, won’t have a path into the NFL this season.

He’s dominated headlines in recent months after he admitted to placing bets on a variety of sports and completed in-patient rehab for a gambling addiction.

The NCAA initially denied his request for reinstatement in May, before a Texas judge granted him a temporary injunction in early June, making him eligible for the 2026 college football season.

However, amid a Big 12 lawsuit against Texas Tech and the backlash around his eligibility, Sorsby opted to apply for the supplemental draft, and in turn had to drop his lawsuit against the NCAA and become ineligible.

But since the NFL has decided not to hold supplemental draft this year, despite plenty of interest from teams around the league, the 22-year-old appeared to be running out of options on Tuesday.

Step up, Mike Repole.

The entrepeneur, who joined the United Football League (UFL) ownership group last year, has tweeted an invitation for Sorsby to join the spring league.

He even laid out the quarterback’s next team.

“Welcome to the UFL, Brendan Sorsby,” Repole posted, after the NFL announce its draft decision.

“The UFL is the league of opportunity. We created our Regional Player Initiative to keep great players closer to home, closer to their fans, and on the field.

“Let’s do this!!!!!

“Brendan Sorsby, welcome to the (Dallas) Renegades. Have your people call my people!!!!!”

What will Brendan Sorsby do in 2026?

While Repole is clearly excited about the prospect of keeping the quarterback in Texas, Sorsby has yet to respond to the offer.

His attorney, however, has made it clear he wants to appeal the NFL’s decision to forgo a supplemental draft.

Jeffrey Kessler claimed the league is ‘in violation’ of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and the law.

“We will pursue this immediately with the NFLPA,” he said, in a statement widely reported.

With the NFL showing no desire for a supplemental draft, and his college eligibility gone for 2026, it’s unclear what Sorsby will do in 2026.

He could take Repole up on his UFL offer, or he could sit tight and later declare for the 2027 NFL Draft.

If Sorsby chooses the latter, he will find himself in a deep quarterback class, which will boast the likes of Arch Manning, Dante Moore and Trinidad Chambliss.

He also won’t have any fresh tape, and will be judged on his 2025 Cincinnati film, likely landing as a third-round developmental prospect at best.
