Ben Godfrey to join ex-Premier League manager in shock European move after cutting loan short

Ben Godfrey is reportedly set to complete a third loan move away from Atalanta.

The defender returned to the Italian side earlier this month after his season-long spell with Sheffield United was cut short.

Godfrey is now close to joining Danish outfit Brondby on loan until the end of the current campaign.

According to The Telegraph, a deal has been agreed with Atalanta and could be finalised in the coming days.

It follows a disappointing stint at Bramall Lane for the 28-year-old.

Godfrey made just four appearances for the Blades after joining the Championship side in the summer.

The last of those outings came in a 1-0 home defeat to Charlton in Chris Wilder’s first match back at the club in September.

Wilder had not included Godfrey in a matchday squad since before his loan was ended at the start of this month.

Godfrey joined Atalanta in 2024 but is now set for his third temporary switch away from the club.

He previously made five appearances on loan at Ipswich during the second half of last season.

His latest side are currently third in the Danish Superliga ahead of their return to action following the winter break.

Brondby have four matches remaining before the top flight splits in half for the season’s conclusion.

Meanwhile, they are currently managed by former Premier League boss Steve Cooper.

Having been appointed on a three-year deal in September, Cooper has won seven of his 13 matches in charge.

However, Brondby were beaten in their final three league matches before the winter break began in December.

Cooper previously guided Nottingham Forest to promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs in 2022.

He later had a brief spell in charge of Leicester City at the start of last term.

Godfrey could make his debut for his new club against Randers on February 8.

Brondby are 11-time Danish champions, with their most recent title coming in 2024.

Meanwhile, their squad already includes former England youth international Luis Binks, who signed from Coventry in the summer.
