Avalanche’s Jared Bednar gets massive vote of confidence after West Final sweep

After the Colorado Avalanche were swept in shocking fashion in the Western Conference Final by the Vegas Golden Knights, speculation began to build about the job security of head coach Jared Bednar.

However, Avalanche GM Joe Sakic has confirmed that Bednar isn’t going anywhere and that the entire coaching staff is coming back for next season.

“No plans to make any moves. We feel he’s the best coach for our team,” said Sakic via DenverSports.com.

Bednar and the Avalanche coaching staff led the club to a pristine record in the regular season, going 55-16-11 for 121 points and laying claim to the President’s Trophy as the NHL’s best regular-season team. Additionally, they won eight of their nine opening Stanley Cup Playoff games en route to a berth in the Conference Final before bowing out against Vegas.

According to Sakic, he’s leaning on the players’ judgment, who enjoy playing for Bednar.

“They respect him. They love playing for him, and that’s a big thing,” Sakic said. “When we look at it for this group, he’s the best coach for the group, and we’re confident in that decision… He’s not just the coach. He’s the voice of the organization. Like I said, the players really believe in him, and I’m going with the players.”

While Bednar is going into the final year of his current contract, Sakic said that a new extension isn’t at the top of his priority list just yet.

“There’s a lot of people that are entering their last year of their contract,” Sakic said. “Right now, our priority is getting through the draft, free agency, trying to make our team as good as possible going into the summer.”
