Astros boost outfield depth by signing ex-Giants, Twins outfielder

The Houston Astros have been in limbo this season, and this is part of the year that may be hard to find the talent they need to improve, unless it’s a trade available. Instead, they went out and signed someone on the open market, outfielder LaMonte Wade Jr.

“The Astros are signing outfielder LaMonte Wade Jr. to a major-league deal, sources tell The Athletic,” Chandler Rome of The Athletic wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Wade was on a minor league deal with the Chicago White Sox before he was granted his release. He also played with the San Francisco Giants.

There’s no doubt that the Astros have dealt with injuries to some of their key players this season, and the hope is that Wade can come in and do what they need. The good news is that Yordan Alvarez has been relatively healthy this season, but with the way the year is going, people are thinking he might be on the trade block.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan recently shared his thoughts surrounding the rumors, and he thinks there’s a possibility.

“Houston could launch an overnight retool were it willing to deal AL MVP favorite Yordan Alvarez, but opposing executives don’t see that happening. The lack of available power bats could make first baseman Christian Walker or third baseman Isaac Paredes a tempting acquisition, but hitters tend to have fewer in-season suitors, leaving marginal relievers (Bryan Abreu, Steven Okert, Enyel De Los Santos) the likeliest Astros to move,” Passan reported.

It would be interesting to see if the Astros become sellers during the deadline, but one good run and they could climb back up in the standings. They’re currently 28-35 and in fourth place in the AL West.
