Yan Diomande is starting to live up to his massive price tag for Real Madrid

After a blockbuster €140m summer transfer, Yan Diomande is starting to show why he belongs at Real Madrid.

In Real Madrid’s collection of glittery, shimmering attackers, it can be easy to get lost. This is, after all, Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham’s club. Walking into the Santiago Bernabéu dressing room for the first time, Yan Diomande surely wondered how he would possibly stand out in all-white.

Recently, though, the Ivorian has started to show he belongs at Real Madrid, scoring his first goal for the club in the weekend win over Villarreal and subsequently impressing in a stunning Champions League comeback win against Roma. Diomande has found a role for himself when many doubted he would be able to.

Diomande was one of the breakout stars of the 2026 World Cup, shining for Ivory Coast as an irrepressible dribbler quick to take on a man down the wing. Before the tournament, there was talk of a €100m transfer from RB Leipzig. After four games at the World Cup, the Bundesliga club raised their asking price. This reflected his summer showing.

Real Madrid were first in line to pay that asking price, although it wasn’t immediately clear why. They were already well stocked for wingers, particularly on the left side where Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior prefer to operate. Real Madrid’s need appeared to be in other areas of their squad.

Some took the signing of Diomande as a sign that Real Madrid were preparing for Vinícius’ exit. The Brazilian spoke to Arsenal about a summer switch to the Premier League, but ultimately decided to stay at the Bernabéu, signing a new contract until the summer of 2032.

Two months later, it’s not exactly obvious how Diomande will fit into the same lineup as Mbappé and Vinícius. José Mourinho has tried using Diomande on the right side without much success – although he was able to contribute from this area against Roma. The 19-year-old has been deployed as an impact sub off the bench, but he has more recently forced his way into Mourinho’s XI over Vinícius.

It was with Mbappé, Vinícius and Diomande all on the pitch together that the latter scored his first goal in all white. The Ivorian drifted into a central position to receive a pass from Fede Valverde before turning and striking the ball into the far corner of the net. The sequence was a demonstration of the teenager’s adaptability.

This coupled with Vinícius’s slow start to the season has quickly increased Diomande’s importance to his new team even if the latter faced some criticism for his shaky first few performances as a Real Madrid player. The teenager’s response since then has been impressive.

Diomande’s performances since the international break

Vinícius’s red card for pulling Nathan Saliba’s hair in Real Madrid’s win over Villarreal likely means Diomande will get an extended run in the team as the Brazilian serves a suspension. Such has been the extent of Vinícius’s dip in form that this could be a good thing for Los Blancos who face a critical run of fixtures culminating in a trip to Barcelona on 25 October.

The goal-scoring performance against Villarreal demonstrated how Diomande might be a better fit than Vinícius for Mourinho’s team. Primarily, the Ivorian combines more naturally with Mbappé in the final third, giving the Frenchman more space than Vinicius does when he is on the pitch.

While Vinícius’ first thought is usually to cut inside off the left side, Diomande offers more verticality. He can get to the byline which gives Real Madrid a different dimension in the attacking third. Rather than playing on top of Mbappé, Diomande has a profile that allows him to play around the French forward.

Diomande’s player traits compared to positional peers in Top 5 leagues

Individually, Diomande has a lot to his game that makes him potent in his own right. The Ivorian is averaging more dribbles per 90 minutes than any other Real Madrid player this season. On top of this, only Arda Güler, Jude Bellingham, Vinícius and Mbappé have created more chances, all of whom have started more league games.

There is still rawness to Diomande’s final product. He doesn’t always make the best decision in the final third, but the potential is clearly there for the teenager to develop into one of the most consistently dangerous wide forwards in the game. It’s why so many clubs spent the summer chasing him.

Real Madrid’s inherent chaos is a risk to Diomande’s development. If Mbappé and Vinícius are at the club for the long term, it’s difficult to envisage how Diomande will ever be more than just a supporting act. Three naturally left-sided attackers simply can’t fit into the same starting lineup.

Even if the Ivorian is outperforming his teammates, the internal politics of the situation could restrict him. He could be squeezed out of the Bernabéu because someone will surely have to be. For the time being, though, Diomande is establishing a platform for himself. One at the very highest level of the game, where he clearly belongs.
