The New York Yankees may have fooled themselves for the majority of the 2026 season. They played their best baseball in the final six weeks of the regular season, and manager Aaron Boone thought he was taking a team into the postseason that had a legitimate chance to make a run at the World Series.
There was no inclination to change those expectations after they defeated the Boston Red Sox in a two-game sweep of the Wild Card series, winning both games with almost no threat from their opponents. However, all hope disappeared quickly in the division series against the Tampa Bay Rays. The American League East champions dispatched the Yankees in three straight games.
The Yankees could not manufacture any kind of consistent offense against the Tampa Bay pitching staff. The Yankees were hurt by Aaron Judge's calf strain that kept the superstar out of the lineup. However, they also struggled in the field against the Rays, committing 4 errors in Game 2 of the series and looking a step slow throughout the game.
The idea that things might change in the future with vice president/general manager Brian Cashman remaining in charge is unlikely. He has put a similar team together in recent seasons and the Yankees have not brought home a World Series title since the 2009 season.
Article Continues BelowManager Aaron Boone has also received his share of criticism from fans. Many are asking for both Cashman and Boone to be dismissed, according to Brendan Kuty of The Athletic.
Whether owner Hal Steinbrenner will make any dramatic changes remains to be seen, but Giancarlo Stanton may not be in the Yankees future. He missed nearly all of the 2026 season with a calf strain, and his return in 2027 is questionable.
