The Atlanta Braves attempted to trade for Jacob deGrom from the Texas Rangers during the 2026 regular season, but deGrom blocked the deal with his no-trade clause. deGrom apparently is not the only Rangers player that Atlanta has had interest in over the past year. According to Joel Sherman of MLB Network, the Braves “checked in on” shortstop Corey Seager last offseason.
“A lot of teams checked in on Seager last offseason,” Sherman said. “… I believe Atlanta was one of those teams.”
According to Sherman, the Braves could end up inquiring about a potential Seager trade once again this offseason.
“I wouldn't be surprised if they did again,” Sherman added.
Texas ultimately did not trade Seager last offseason. Atlanta re-signed Ha-Seong Kim to be the everyday shortstop, but injuries limited Kim's overall playing time throughout the '26 regular season. The Braves would benefit from adding a reliable shortstop during the upcoming offseason.
Seager, though, has also dealt with injury trouble over the years. The 32-year-old has not played in 150 or more games since 2021 and 120 or more games since 2024. In 2026, Seager was limited to a total of 102 contests.

There is risk when it comes to the idea of acquiring Corey Seager. His injury history cannot be ignored and he's also set to make $31 million each season through the 2031 campaign.
It will be interesting to see if the Braves end up reaching out about a Seager deal once again. According to Sherman, it is a realistic possibility.
