Wolves vs West Bromwich Albion quick tips

Wolves vs West Bromwich Albion predictions

It is not as famous a fixture as Manchester United vs Liverpool, Arsenal vs Tottenham Hotspur or Newcastle United vs Sunderland, but there is no love lost between Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Bromwich Albion.

In fact, a survey conducted by The New Football Pools in 2008 found this rivalry to be the fiercest in English football.

Meetings between Wolves and West Brom have been few and far between over the last five years. There has been just one since May 2021: a 2-0 victory for Wolves in the FA Cup.

This weekend they will renew hostilities in the league for the first time in more than five years, as Wolves host West Brom at Molineux.

Wolves were poor in the Premier League last season, accumulating just 20 points as they sunk to the Championship.

But they have made a positive start to the current campaign as they seek an instant return to the top tier under Cesar Peixoto.

Raul Jimenez’s last-gasp goal brought them a 1-0 victory over Sheffield United last weekend, moving Wolves up to seventh in the standings.

West Brom are currently four places above their chief adversaries. The 2025/26 season was one to forget for the Baggies, who finished just one place above the Championship relegation zone.

It is still early days, but West Brom are unlikely to be involved in a basement battle this time around.

Wolves vs West Bromwich Albion tips

Arch-rivals Wolves and West Bromwich Albion go head-to-head in the Championship on Sunday.

Wolves are the favourites

West Bromwich Albion may be above Wolverhampton Wanderers in the table, but the latter are still seen as the more likely promotion candidates by the bookies.

Wolves have a strong squad at their disposal, aided by the parachute payments provided to recently relegated teams.

Of course, that does not guarantee victory in a one-off game, but home advantage is another factor in Wolves’ favour.

West Brom have fared well so far this term, but this is a huge test of their credentials. The Baggies are unlikely to disgrace themselves, yet they may ultimately come off second best.

Expect hard-fought tussle

Wolverhampton Wanderers had to dig deep to get over the line against Sheffield United last time out.

There is nothing quite like a 1-0 away win secured with a last-minute winner, so the mood on the journey back to the Black Country would have been overwhelmingly positive.

That was the first time in this Championship season that a Wolves match has featured fewer than three goals, but we expect this weekend’s clash with West Bromwich Albion to follow suit.

Derby games are often tight and tense affairs, and this one is set to follow that pattern.

Armstrong has chance

Raul Jimenez could prove to be one of the signings of this Championship season.

The Mexico international could still do a job in the Premier League, but his connection with Wolverhampton Wanderers saw him return to Molineux over the summer.

However, a knee injury has ruled Jimenez out of the derby, so Adam Armstrong will deputise up front.

This is a golden opportunity for Armstrong to endear himself to the Wolves fans - and we expect him to take it.
