The Washington Wizards finished last in the Eastern Conference last season with a record of 17-65, a disappointing mark after January 2026's trade for sharpshooter Trae Young. The four-time All-Star played in just five games with the Wizards last season after suffering a right quad contusion in March.

The Wizards star is ready to put a tough year behind him and looking forward to the 2026-27 season based on comments made on Michael Porter Jr.'s ‘Curious Mike' show.

“For me, it's just about, obviously I got to stay healthy, but that's not something I'm worried about at all. Last year was just last year, and for me, I'm ready to play, I'm ready to get back to what I've been my whole career, but just taking it to another level.

“And this is not anything different. For me, switching places and switching environments is now giving me a breath of fresh air and for me, I'm ready to take advantage of it.”

Young spoke highly of the people around him in Washington, D.C. and said he “always love(s) seeing everybody around (him) happy,” according to his interview with Porter Jr.

The Wizards have a large and talented and lineup on paper with former top pick Alex Sarr joined by Anthony Davis, who is on trade watch, and 2026 top pick AJ Dybantsa. How Young leads with both his actions and his words could determine whether the Wizards morph into a surefire playoff team or stay mired in the Eastern Conference basement.

Young showed plenty of courage, strength and leadership in leading the Hawks to the playoffs three times, now he will be tested on a whole new level with a franchise in dire need of something to get excited about.
