Washington Wizards star Trae Young's decision to wear No. 3 entering the 2026-27 NBA season carries a deeper meaning than simply honoring two of his favorite players, Chris Paul and Allen Iverson.
After spending eight seasons wearing No. 11 with the Atlanta Hawks, Young switched to No. 3 following his arrival in Washington. However, the four-time All-Star revealed that his new number also represents a family connection dating back to his childhood.
During a recent episode of WatchGuys with Robertino, Young explained how his father's basketball career influenced his decision to wear No. 3 with the Wizards.
“Yeah, I mean, I wore number three my freshman year of high school. So I've worn it before. It was my dad's number in college and growing up. So, I mean, my favorite players Chris Paul and Allen Iverson were number three,” Young said.
“That was something that was always kind of in my DNA. So it was kind of easy getting over here and switching to number three. So I'm looking forward to making some memories in that number now.”
Young's admiration for Paul and Iverson adds another layer to the decision. Both guards became influential figures during their respective NBA careers, with Paul establishing himself as one of the league's premier playmakers and Iverson becoming known for his scoring ability and cultural impact.
The conversation eventually shifted toward basketball's influence on personal style after host Robertino highlighted Iverson's impact on fashion.
Young identified another former NBA guard, Steve Nash, as his favorite player growing up.
“Yeah, I mean, obviously, yeah. Steve Nash, I mean, I said Steve Nash. Steve Nash was my favorite player,” Young said.
When asked whether Nash remained his all-time favorite, Young confirmed that he did before discussing the influence of NBA players on personal expression.
“All time. He's obviously a guy that transcended style and made it where it's flashy and okay to wear what you want and be flashy and still go out and do your thing. I don't know if there was one guy who really stood out to me.”
Trae Young discusses Wizards teammates, offers advice to AJ Dybantsa

Earlier in the episode, Young also discussed his excitement surrounding Washington's revamped roster, including Anthony Davis and No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa.
Young praised Dybantsa for handling the expectations accompanying his arrival in the NBA, noting that the pressure surrounding the top selection has not appeared to affect his demeanor.
“Like, being the number one pick, there's a lot of pressure that comes with it, but you can't really see it just by being around him,” Young said.

Young advised Dybantsa to prioritize team success rather than focus exclusively on establishing his individual reputation.
“Obviously, it's easy to focus on yourself and try to make your mark. But I think the easiest way to find success early is focusing on the team's success,” Young said.
Washington enters the regular season following Friday's 107-106 preseason loss to the New Orleans Pelicans.
The Wizards will open their 2026-27 campaign Wednesday, Oct. 21, when they host the Milwaukee Bucks at 7 p.m. ET.
For Young, the upcoming season represents an opportunity to establish a new chapter in Washington while wearing a number that connects his family history with his basketball inspirations.
