Washington Wizards star Trae Young has a message for rookie AJ Dybantsa as the No. 1 overall pick prepares to navigate the expectations surrounding his first NBA season: prioritize winning over individual success.
With Washington concluding its preseason schedule following Friday's 107-106 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans, Young shared his thoughts on Dybantsa's development and the pressure accompanying his arrival in the nation's capital.
During a recent episode of WatchGuys with Robertino, Young praised Dybantsa's approach to the game while discussing the Wizards' revamped roster, which also features Anthony Davis.
“Yeah, I mean, they're, I mean, AJ's, I mean, as great as advertised, obviously. Like, being the number one pick, there's a lot of pressure that comes with it, but you can't really see it just by being around him,” Young said.
The four-time All-Star also expressed confidence in Washington's other young players, including Tre Johnson and Kyshawn George, believing their contributions will receive more recognition as the Wizards begin winning.
Young then offered Dybantsa advice on navigating his rookie campaign without becoming consumed by individual expectations.
“Obviously, it's easy to focus on yourself and try to make your mark. But I think the easiest way to find success early is focusing on the team's success. Finding out where you fit in and where you can stand out too,” Young said.
“So I think coming in and just finding your ways to fit in with the team is the best way to be the best version of yourself. So that would be the best advice I could give.”
AJ Dybantsa's ankle injury raises concerns ahead of Wizards' season opener
However, Dybantsa's highly anticipated regular-season debut could be in jeopardy after the rookie suffered a mild left ankle sprain during Friday's preseason finale against New Orleans.
The injury occurred during the first quarter when Dybantsa elevated for a midrange jumper before appearing to roll his ankle upon landing. He was slow to return to his feet as Washington called a timeout.
Teammates subsequently helped Dybantsa to the locker room, where he remained for the rest of the contest.

The Wizards selected Dybantsa first overall in June's NBA Draft after finishing the 2025-26 campaign with a league-worst 17-65 record.
Washington has since shifted its attention toward competing for a playoff berth behind Young, Davis and its developing young core.
The Wizards will open their 2026-27 regular season Wednesday, Oct. 21, when they host the Milwaukee Bucks at 7 p.m. ET. Dybantsa's availability remains uncertain following Friday's injury.
