Is this finally the year the New York Yankees get it together? For years, the Bronx has seen their baseball team make it to the postseason, only to falter in the biggest moments. This year, New York is once again one of the top teams left, despite being a Wild Card team.
The Yankees are up against a truly formidable foe in the first-seeded Tampa Bay Rays. There's a lot of concern about whether this veteran team can go toe-to-toe with their resurgent division rivals. However, ace Cam Schlittler isn't worried about his team in the slightest. Why? Well, here's what the star has to say.
“We’re on a roll at the right time,” Schlittler said, per Gary Phillips.
Article Continues BelowAaron Boone further expanded on that point, saying, “I like the balance of our club right now. Again, we played great baseball in a lot of ways here, obviously anchored by our two great starters that got us off on a great foot. But a lot of really good things happened with this group. We get a chance to keep it going.”
The Yankees are coming off a comfortable dismantling of the Boston Red Sox in the Wild Card round. Schlitter got the start in Game 1, and the ace pitcher immediately showed why he's earned his spot as the postseason opening starter. Schlittler pitches 6 1/3 innings of no-run ball, allowing just two hits while striking out ten batters. The Yankees bullpen finished the job, holding Boston scoreless as their hitting unit scored nine runs.
Max Fried got the ball in Game 2, and he was also incredible for New York. In six innings, the Yankees star allowed just one hit while striking out six. New York cruised to a comfortable 9-2 win to secure their spot in the Wild Card round. They now look to keep that momentum against a well-rested Rays team.
