The New York Yankees are activating right-handed pitcher Clarke Schmidt from the injured list, the team announced Wednesday. The move was already expected, but now it is official. In a corresponding move, the Yankees are designating infielder/outfielder Oswaldo Cabrera for assignment.

Schmidt has been recovering from Tommy John surgery. The 30-year-old has not appeared in an MLB game since the 2025 season. He's a reliable hurler who will give New York's pitching additional depth — which certainly never hurts in the postseason.

As for Cabrera, the 27-year-old has spent time with the Yankees over the years. He's been back and forth between MLB and the minor leagues ever since making his big league debut back in 2022. In 2026, Cabrera appeared in just three MLB games. Overall, he has hit .232/.292/.343 across 304 games played in the big leagues.

His career minor league slash line currently sits at .266/.322/.417 across 712 total games. In 2026, he hit .288/.345/.444 in 122 games at Triple-A.

The Yankees recently clinched a postseason spot. They will reach the playoffs as an American League Wild Card team at the very least. However, they are only 3.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays for the American League East division lead.

New York would obviously love to win the division. The Yankees are hopeful that Schmidt can make an impact and help them make things interesting in the AL East. The Rays, though, are not displaying any signs of slowing down.
