The first inning of Game 2 of the ALDS did not go the way the Chicago White Sox wanted. Starting pitcher Adam Kay allowed a hit and a walk, allowing two Cleveland Guardians players to get on base almost immediately. Then, things continued to go down from there.
Manager Will Venable decided to go to the bullpen early, pulling Kay off the mound in favor of Sean Newcomb, according to Jon Morosi of the MLB Network. The 31-year-old left-hander pitched just 0.1 innings before being taken out of the game.
“Jose Ramirez's quick baserunning allowed the Guardians to avoid a double play — and brought about a pitching change only 3 batters into the game,” Morosi reported.
Shortly after coming into the game, Newcomb fielded a high-chopper hit back toward him from his pitch. But the 10-year veteran botched the throw to first base, leading to the Guardians scoring two runs on the play with just one out in the bottom of the first.
