The Tampa Bay Buccaneers star quarterback Baker Mayfield is currently dealing with a dislocated thumb. According to the latest update from league insider Adam Schefter, the Buccaneers star is expected to miss anywhere from three to six weeks.
For the first time in four years, the Buccaneers started someone other than Baker Mayfield at quarterback in Week 4 against the Green Bay Packers, but they ultimately suffered a 17-14 loss. The loss prompted head coach Todd Bowles to offer an honest assessment of the team's disappointing start.
According to Greg Auman of Fox Sports, Bowles said the Buccaneers have continued to lose close games and now need to figure out how to finish those games. While the narrow losses themselves aren't frustrating because the team has been competitive, Bowles admitted that being 0-4 is frustrating and said the need for improvement starts with him.
Mayfield suffered the injury during Tampa Bay's 23-16 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3. The timing of the injury could not have been worse for the Buccaneers, who were already struggling to find their footing early in the season.
Article Continues BelowTampa Bay then turned to undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels in Mayfield's absence in Week 4. Daniels completed 19 of 27 passes for 148 yards and one touchdown while throwing two interceptions.
For a rookie making his first NFL start, Daniels' performance wasn't necessarily all bad. His showing gives Tampa Bay at least some reason for optimism, but the Buccaneers certainly can't afford to rely on the rookie alone if they want to turn their season around.
It has been a dreadful start to the season for the Bucs, who are still searching for their first win. For now, the Buccaneers will continue to rely on Daniels while Mayfield works his way back. The rookie has an opportunity to prove that he can keep Tampa Bay competitive, but the team's long-term hopes remain closely tied to Mayfield's recovery.
