The Carolina Panthers finally broke through under the brightest lights. By defeating the Detroit Lions 32-26 on Sunday Night Football at Bank of America Stadium, Carolina improved to 2-2. The Panthers accomplished something the franchise had not done since 2021: win multiple games within the first four weeks of a season.
As ESPN NFL reporter Mike Kaye noted, the victory ended a five-year drought that had become another symbol of Carolina’s struggles. The Panthers have already matched the win total of their disastrous 2023 campaign, when they finished 2-15. And Carolina still has four months of the 2026 season still ahead. More importantly, the victory provided evidence that head coach Dave Canales’ rebuilding effort is beginning to translate into results.
Carolina’s offense powered the breakthrough. Rising star wideout Tetairoa McMillan produced a spectacular 14-catch, 192-yard, two-touchdown performance. Chuba Hubbard added 122 rushing yards and two scores. QB Bryce Young delivered 329 passing yards without committing a turnover. Together, the trio helped the Panthers survive Detroit’s late push and secure their second win of the season.

They then demolished the Atlanta Falcons 34-3 before falling 21-18 to the Cleveland Browns. Injuries to Jonathon Brooks and Xavier Legette have tested the roster. However, Young’s passing attack, McMillan’s emergence, and timely defensive plays have kept the Panthers competitive in the NFC South.
The Panthers still have plenty to prove, of course. That said, Sunday’s victory represented more than another mark in the win column. Carolina has finally cleared a hurdle that had eluded the organization for years. Now, the NFC South race suddenly looks much more interesting.
