Oklahoma is 2-2 this year, and quarterback John Mateer hasn't been good. The quarterback struggled enough against Georgia that head coach Brent Venables had to confirm that Mateer was still the top quarterback.
Mateer knows he has not been playing well this year and is talking about his struggles so far this year, per Daniel Hager of On3.
“The fact that I haven’t performed is disappointing. But, I’m blessed to play ball today and get better,” Mateer said, via SoonerScoop’s George Stoia III. “It’s a kid’s game that we all take really seriously, and I’m honored to stand here in this position. I come out to practice today knowing it’s everything I’ve ever dreamed of. Even when you struggle and get judged, it’s because I’ve done well in the past, and something is expected of me. That’s okay. This is the position I’m in, and I’m learning.”
This year, Matter is 72 for 109 passing, whuile have eight touchdowns and four interceptions. He has also been sacked eight times. Still, all eight sacks and four interceptions have come in the last three games. He also has run for just 76 yards this year and has not scored on the ground. Mateer has yet to throw for 300 yards in a game or run for over 50 yards.
College football analyst David Pollack has noticed the struggles from Mateer as well.

Listen, the run game is non-existent for Oklahoma. They’re not pushing people around. He’s doing his best to contribute to the run game.”
Oklahoma has had a week to recover from the 41-13 beatdown they took from Georgia. After having a bye last week, they face off against the top team in the nation, Texas, in the 122nd Red River Rivalry.
