Sean Payton could be nearing a major change to the Denver Broncos’ offense, with NFL insiders increasingly expecting him to reclaim play-calling duties from Davis Webb.
In their recent NFL Week 5 discussion, ESPN’s Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler both indicated that Webb may have more time, but Denver’s offensive results are putting the arrangement under growing pressure.
“Taking it off head coaches for a while, a lot of people around the league seem to think Broncos coach Sean Payton won't wait too much longer to take playcalling back from Davis Webb, though I have to believe it won't be an impulse decision if it happens,” Graziano wrote.
Fowler discussed a similar assessment while pointing to Denver’s unusual situation. Payton is widely regarded as one of the NFL’s best offensive play-callers, yet he handed those responsibilities to Webb this season.
“My sense is Webb will have more time, but at some point the product needs to match the expectations,” Fowler added.
Webb took over the play-calling role after previously serving as Denver’s quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator. Through four games, the Broncos rank 27th in both total offense and scoring, averaging 280.3 yards and 18.5 points per game.
Article Continues BelowBo Nix has also struggled to find his rhythm. He has completed 60% of his passes for 819 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions through four games, leaving Denver looking for more consistency from its offense.
The Broncos are now 2-2 and face the winless Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. It could give Webb another opportunity to prove he deserves to keep calling plays.
