After a spirited second-half comeback by Miami, Notre Dame football held on to bring down the No. 1-ranked Hurricanes, 31-24. However, the win was not without controversy.
Miami's Elija Lofton looked to have scored a potential game-tying touchdown on fourth down with under four minutes left in the game. But the referees ruled it as an incomplete pass after Irish safety Luke Talich's intervention, and Miami turned the ball over on downs.
When asked about his game-saving pass breakup, Talich didn't think there was much controversial about it.
“I felt like I got the ball out. I felt like he didn’t have control of it,” Talich said, per The Athletic's Pete Sampson.
Based on the replay, while it was close, it didn't look like Lofton had full control of the football before Talich was able to break up the pass. As such, an incompletion was the correct call.

The senior safety has been coming through all season long for Notre Dame. He is second on the team with 41 tackles and leads the team with three picks.
While Talich deserves credit for his late-game heroics, CJ Carr deserves credit for putting Notre Dame in that position in the first place. The Irish quarterback was sensation from start to finish with 319 yards and three touchdowns, two of which going to Micah Gilbert. It's that top-tier quarterback play that has the Irish fans dreaming of a national championship.
