Amir Jangoo, the wicketkeeper-batter, has been added to West Indies' T20I squad for the upcoming games in India as cover for Jewel Andrew, who sustained a finger injury during the third ODI against India on Saturday. Andrew has not been ruled out of the five-match series and "is still being monitored and assessed by the medical team", a CWI statement on Monday morning said.
Andrew, the 19-year-old, had been dismissed for a first-ball duck in the first India vs West Indies ODI, and returned to the XI for the third game after sitting out the second. Andrew hurt a finger when he took the catch to dismiss Naman Dhir inside the ring at cover and he had to go to a hospital for scans soon after. Fortunately for him and West Indies, no fracture was revealed. He, however, did not bat in West Indies' successful chase.
Jangoo, 29, is regarded as more of a long-format player, but has turned out in seven T20Is for West Indies since making his international debut in December 2024. His record with the bat in those games is middling: 163 runs at a strike rate of 120.74.
His strike rate from 34 T20s is poorer at 104.25, but he played his part in Antigua and Barbuda Falcons' run to the CPL 2026 title in September, finishing with 213 runs, though his strike rate continued to be well below par: 107.57. His most important innings in CPL 2026 came in the title contest, when he scored 57 not out in 34 balls, hitting four fours and three sixes, as Falcons won by eight wickets against Jamaica Kingsmen.
Jangoo was in sparkling form in the ODIs against India, scoring 58 not out, 114 and 67 to finish third on the run-scorers' list across teams, his tally of 239 runs only behind those of Shubman Gill (334) and Shai Hope (278).
The first India vs West Indies T20I will be played in Lucknow on Tuesday, with games to follow in Ranchi (October 9), Indore (October 11), Hyderabad (October 14) and Bengaluru (October 17).
