Rohit Sharma produced a sharp piece of fielding during the 2nd ODI between India and West Indies at Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on September 30, 2026. Stationed in the deep mid-wicket region, the 39-year-old raced to his right and timed a dive perfectly to flick the ball back just before it could reach the boundary cushion, saving what looked like a certain four.

The incident occurred on the first ball of the 36th over, bowled by Naman Dhir. West Indies batter Amir Jangoo stepped out of his crease and heaved towards the mid-wicket fence but mistimed the shot badly. The ball skied high and dropped just short of the rope, with Rohit covering the ground quickly to cut it off. Jangoo, who had not expected Rohit to get there in time, settled for a single off the delivery. The BCCI shared a clip of the moment on X, capturing the full effort.

The fielding moment in the 36th over

The save was notable given the distance Rohit had to cover and the precision required in the dive. Rohit has worked on his fitness during breaks between ODI assignments and that is visible on the field. Early in his career, Rohit Gurunath Sharma was regarded as one of India's finest fielders, regularly deployed at backward point.

Rohit had scored 32 off 35 balls in the series opener, hitting three sixes and two fours to give India a solid platform. His most recent substantial ODI score before this series was 138 against England at Lord's in the third ODI on July 19, 2026. Heading into this match, he needed more than 73 runs to reach 12,000 ODI runs, a milestone that would make him the second-fastest batter to that mark after Virat Kohli, going past Sachin Tendulkar's record.

The West Indies are well on their way to put up a massive first-innings total after being invited by Shubman Gill to bat first. The home side would want Rohit to get off to a flying start and convert it into a big one, which would take a bit of pressure off the batters to follow.
