Lane Kiffin knew what was coming, and it still arrived louder than most coaches ever experience. Ole Miss fans booed and cursed at the LSU coach as he left the field at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Saturday night following a 32-24 loss to his former program, capping a day of sustained hostility that began before sunrise.

The treatment started hours earlier. Kiffin appeared on ESPN's College GameDay via satellite and was booed heavily by the Oxford crowd the moment his face hit the screen. He tried to deflect the attention toward the players. “It's not about me,” Kiffin said. “Both teams have great players, great coaches. Have a lot of respect for their program.”

He then thanked the show for stirring the crowd, quipping that he appreciated them gaslighting Ole Miss fans that morning. Kiffin also revealed that LSU had staff heckle players during practice week specifically to prepare them for the environment.

The jeers only intensified when he arrived at the stadium, where his walk in was met with a wall of noise. Kiffin waved at the crowd as it booed him, and during warmups he threw a ball into the stands in what many read as a needle back at the fan base. By the time the game ended with Jaylon Braxton intercepting Sam Leavitt in the end zone on fourth-and-goal, the building had its ending.

The animosity traces directly to last November. Kiffin informed athletic director Keith Carter that he was taking the LSU job, then asked to coach the Rebels through the College Football Playoff and was denied. Fans gathered at the Oxford airport to boo, curse and flip him off as he boarded a jet for Baton Rouge, and Pete Golding took over and won two playoff games.

Kiffin admitted afterward that the day affected him more than he anticipated, saying he had expected to stay in competitive mode and could not predict his own emotions. He also congratulated his former players and coaches, saying they deserved the win.

LSU falls to 2-1 and 0-1 in SEC play.
