On Thursday night, fans got their first opportunity to take a closer look at Anthony Davis in a Washington Wizards uniform, as he suited up for the team for the first time in an official capacity in a preseason contest against the New York Knicks.

The Wizards acquired Davis back in February in a trade with the Dallas Mavericks. Davis did not suit up in a single regular-season game for Washington since then due to a litany of injuries, most notably a left-hand ligament injury that kept him out for all but 20 games this past season.

Suffice to say, the injury-prone label, which has stuck with Davis throughout his career, remains. And Knicks color commentator and Hall of Famer, Walt Frazier, savagely reminded everyone of Davis' moniker that came out of his injury-proneness.

“AD [has] pedigree, championship pedigree. But like his nickname, ‘Street Clothes', he can't stay healthy,” Frazier said, via SleeperKnicks on X.

Since the 2020-21 season, Davis has missed at least 25 games in a single season in six out of seven campaigns. He did play in 76 games during the 2023-24 campaign, but otherwise, the Wizards star has had a consistent tendency to miss plenty of games.

It's understandable still why the Wizards took the risk in trading for Davis and his huge contract ($58.4 million this season, player option for $62.8 million next season). For starters, they did not give up plenty of value.

They only had to trade away Khris Middleton (who's back with the team anyway), Jaden Hardy, and AJ Johnson, while giving up the Oklahoma City Thunder's 2026 first-round pick (which became Koa Peat) and the Golden State Warriors' 2030 first-round pick that most likely will be a second-rounder.

Moreover, Davis helps bring a ton of respectability and leadership into a Wizards team that's in need of some veteran knowhow to steer their young core and mold them in contending ways.

But no one should be surprised if Davis misses more games than he plays in yet again for this upcoming season.
