The Minnesota Vikings recently shook things up by trading quarterback JJ McCarthy to the New York Giants in exchange for future draft compensation. The move comes amid the team's hot 3-0 start to the season, with Kyler Murray recently returning to the lineup after suffering a concussion in Week 1.
At one point, McCarthy was thought to be the quarterback of the future for Minnesota, and now, more information has been revealed on how the prospect of him leaving initially discouraged the team from pursuing veteran Aaron Rodgers.
“…concerns with Rodgers’ potential fit and the possibility of McCarthy’s camp requesting a trade contributed to the Vikings’ dice roll that McCarthy could be a franchise quarterback for the long term. The Vikings moved forward into the spring and summer hoping that an intentional structure could accelerate McCarthy’s growth,” reported Alec Lewis of The Athletic.
Of course, things didn't end up working out that way, as McCarthy struggled mightily in his first season under center last year, having missed his entire rookie season due to an injury, and the team brought in the veteran Murray in free agency this year, with the former Arizona Cardinals star going on to win the starting job.
Lewis also mentioned that the Vikings also thought that Daniel Jones might consider signing with them the previous offseason after he initially signed with their practice squad in 2024, although he ended up taking his talents to the Indianapolis Colts, while Minnesota starter Daniel Jones went to the Seattle Seahawks, with whom he won a Super Bowl last year.
Clearly, the Vikings put up several fail-safes in place to avoid the exact scenario they currently find themselves in.
