The Minnesota Vikings have explored potential running back additions ahead of the NFL trade deadline, but financial limitations could lead the organization to pursue offensive line or tight end help instead of acquiring Indianapolis Colts star Jonathan Taylor.
ESPN insider Dan Graziano reported Wednesday that Minnesota has expressed interest in strengthening its rushing attack, although the team's salary cap situation could complicate a potential blockbuster trade.
“Minnesota has looked around at running backs, but it doesn't sound as if the Vikings are in position to take on much salary. If they make an addition to help their running game, it might just as easily be an interior offensive lineman or a blocking tight end. And the Packers have checked in on running backs (Josh Jacobs' situation remains a major question mark) as well as offensive linemen. All four teams would occupy playoff spots if the season were to end right now, and I expect them all to be at least somewhat active. In some cases, they'll be competing for the same players.”
Graziano's report suggests the Vikings could prioritize improving their existing rushing attack through additional blocking rather than making a significant investment at running back.
Taylor has emerged as a potential trade candidate amid Indianapolis' ongoing roster overhaul, with the Colts reportedly willing to entertain offers for their franchise running back.
However, acquiring Taylor would likely require substantial draft compensation in addition to the financial commitment associated with his contract.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler previously reported that teams around the league believe Taylor could command a second-round draft pick and additional compensation.
NFL Network's Tom Pelissero also reported that Indianapolis had already rejected an offer involving a 2027 second-round selection and another draft pick.
Those demands could make pursuing a less expensive alternative more appealing for Minnesota.
Vikings weigh trade options as Colts continue struggling
The Vikings (6-1) are looking to strengthen their roster following a 19-15 loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 8, with another challenging matchup approaching.
Minnesota will face the Buffalo Bills (6-1) on Monday Night Football in Week 9, providing an opportunity to rebound against another team with postseason aspirations.

Indianapolis has now lost four consecutive games, further raising questions about the organization's direction following its recent trades involving Quenton Nelson and DeForest Buckner.
The Colts could continue exploring opportunities to accumulate future draft capital, particularly if another team presents an attractive offer for Taylor.
Indianapolis will attempt to snap its losing streak against the Dallas Cowboys (3-5) on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET on Fox.
For Minnesota, the decision could ultimately come down to whether improving its blocking provides a more practical solution than acquiring another established running back before the deadline.
