UFC Noche Results: Jean Silva Submits Jose Delgado, Moreno Wins

Jean Silva claims a third-round submission over José Delgado, while Brandon Moreno ends his losing streak with a split-decision win at UFC Noche.

Jean Silva wins the main event of UFC Noche via rear-naked choke in the 3rd round after overcoming significant adversity in the first 2 rounds!

Unranked featherweight fighter Jose Delgado got his first main event on only a few weeks’ notice after Silva’s original opponent Yair Rodríguez pulled out due to an injury. Delgado hoped to put on his best performance yet and upset the No. 6-ranked Jean Silva. Silva himself last fought in January, defeating fellow ranked featherweight Arnold Allen via decision. 

It was Jose Delgado who started the fight on top. It took Silva almost 3 minutes to throw his first strike of the fight. Using this to his advantage, Delgado landed a big right hand to knock down the Brazilian. Delgado followed him to the ground to finish the fight but failed to do so. After the fight got back to the feet, Delgado finished the round with some pressuring punches and head kicks. 

Silva started round 2 with more urgency, throwing more strikes and landing well. Delgado landed a nice combo in a clinch, Silva replying with an elbow. Silva started to grow into the fight, landing more and more strikes and eventually landing a takedown. After landing some big strikes on the ground, both fighters got up, and it’s a scrappy end to round 2. 

It was round 3 which brought the end of the fight. After another relatively slow start, Silva landed a strong right hand, dropping Delgado to the floor. Silva told him to get up, but instead Delgado tried a takedown of his own. Silva managed to get the top position and then ended the fight via a single-handed rear-naked choke. 

Brandon Moreno is back in the win column after a split decision win over Joseph Morales

After back-to-back losses to Lone’er Kavanagh and Tatsuro Taira, the ex-2x flyweight champion Brandon Moreno was desperate to get a win and start his next title charge. But in his way was Joseph Morales, who was looking to extend his win streak to 7 and break into the flyweight rankings. 

Round 1 was a very competitive round which could have gone to either fighter. Both fighters were going back and forth, trading some big hits. Morales landed a takedown, but the fight quickly got back up to the feet. After some more even exchanges, round 1 came to a close.

Morales seemingly took control of the fight at the start of round 2, landing a straight right hand, causing Moreno to stumble backwards, and then landing a strong spinning elbow soon after. Moreno recovered quickly and managed to cause some damage of his own before the end of the round. Round 3 started with both fighters swinging recklessly. The fight is taken to the floor for a brief moment before the fighters get back to their feet.

After some strong leg kicks and a big straight punch from Moreno. The fight goes back to the floor with Moreno getting top position. Morales threw some big elbows from the bottom, but that’s where the fight ultimately ended, and it went to the judges’ scorecards. Tommy McMillen defeats Marwan Rahiki in a fight of the year contender

A fight between 2 undefeated prospects in the featherweight division with genuine bad blood between them. It seemed impossible for this fight to be a let down, and it was anything but! 

McMillen started the fight with an early takedown, attempting an arm triangle, but Rahiki did well to defend and manage to get back to his feet. McMillen took control early, finding lots of success with his punches. Rahiki seemed to grow into the fight, landing some hard body shots near the end of round 1. At the end of the round, McMillen landed a right overhand, cutting the cheek of his opponent. 

Round 2 continued with the same fast pace that round 1 ended with. Similar to the round prior, McMillen attempted a guillotine submission, but again Rahiki defended well. Both fighters stood in the middle of the octagon swinging, looking to finish the fight quickly. Rahiki then landed a huge uppercut, rocking McMillen and cutting open his cheek. McMillen stumbled all across the octagon but somehow managed to stay in the fight and even ended the round in top position. 

Both fighters started round 3 evidently exhausted. McMillen was still recovering from the previous round, and Rahiki was tired from trying to finish the fight. As the round started, the whole arena was on its feet applauding the 2 warriors in the octagon. McMillen quickly got his revenge, landing a huge strike and dropping Rahiki to the floor. The American nearly gets the D’Arce choke, but again, Rahiki defends it well. McMillen landed a couple more takedowns near the end of the fight, but ultimately, the fight ended with both fighters hitting each other in the clinch. The judges scored the contest 29-28 29-28 29-28, with Tommy McMillen coming out on top. 

Other main card bouts saw wins for Grasso, Blaydes and Martínez

After UFC flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko was stripped of the title due to injury, the schedule listed Natalia Silva vs Wang Cong for the title for UFC 332. The flyweight bout between Alexa Grasso and Manon Fioret was sure to be a title contention fight. Grasso started with real intensity, knocking down her opponent inside the first round and never looking back. She faced some adversity late in the second, getting cut by a flying knee, but overall her rapid combos and her elite boxing carried her to a 29-28 unanimous decision victory.

Both heavyweights Curtis Blaydes and Waldo Cortes-Acosta came into this fight off the back of losses to Josh Hokit and Alexander Volkov, respectively. After a fight-of-the-year contender against Hokit, fans were expecting Blaydes to come out and put on another show, but that is not how the fight happened. In what turned out to be a relatively dull affair. The crowd spent most of the fight booing the fighters, as most of the fight was spent up against the cage. Blaydes managed to get on the fight side of the judges’ scorecards this time around, winning 29-28 unanimously.

The main card of the night opened with a bantamweight bout between Dan Ige and David Martínez. The early stages of the fight were spent with both fighters trying to figure each other out, with Martínez focusing on leg kicks to slow Ige down. The plan worked, and Ige began to limp early in round 2. From then on, Martínez took control, landing some heavy hits and knocking Ige down in the 3rd. Ige found some success towards the end of the fight, but it was not enough. Martínez wins by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28). 

Memorable prelims

The featured preliminary fight was fought between Tim Elliot and Edgar Cháirez as a catchweight bout of 130lbs. Cháirez started the fight very strongly, wobbling Elliot early on with a straight right hand.

After only 1 minute into the fight, Cháirez landed multiple big hits, and it looked like the fight would be over quickly. However, against the momentum of the fight, Elliot landed a big left hand of his own, pointing at his opponent as he stumbled across the octagon. From then on out, both fighters went back and forth, landing and receiving big hits, but both refusing to give up. In what can only be described as an all-out war, Tim Elliot eventually won via unanimous decision (29-28).

Very early in the card saw 2 young prospects, Sean King III and Jessie Rojas. King was scheduled to be on the contender series in a couple of weeks’ time, but got the call to be on this card, which he gladly accepted. Jessie Rojas was looking to follow his brother Raul Rojas Jr.’s footsteps to get a win in the UFC. The fight, however, only lasted 35 seconds. After a lively start by King, he picked Rojas up and slammed him onto the canvas. Rojas landed on his head and was instantly knocked out from the landing.

The opening fight of the night was a flyweight bout between JJ Aldrich and fan favourite Regina Tarín. Tarín put on a show in her last UFC fight, which was also her debut (and on 3 days’ notice), and since then her popularity has skyrocketed. Aldrich started slow, choosing the right moments to throw her strikes, and they landed, busting Tarín’s nose early. The 21-year-old from Mexico responded by making the fight a brawl to match her fighting style. From this, Tarín’s confidence kept growing and growing in the fight, landing well and dodging any strikes thrown at her. The fight eventually went to the scorecards, where Regina Tarín won by unanimous decision (29-28), increasing her record to 9-0!
