Bears quarterback Tyson Bagent played every snap in Sunday’s win over the Jets. And he took every snap but one — the first one, which meant that technically, he was not considered the starting quarterback.
On the Bears’ first play, they had Case Keenum take the snap with Bagent lined up wide, and because of that, the Elias Sports Bureau credits Keenum as the official starter.
That means the league’s official statistics say Keenum, not Bagent, was the winning quarterback. Bagent says that doesn’t matter to him.
Asked by a reporter whether it’s fair that Keenum gets credit, Bagent answered, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
When the situation was explained to Bagent, he said it doesn’t matter to him.
“I’m not going to go back and forth with who we think should get the victory or who started or anything like that, I’m just glad we could execute and come away with the victory,” Bagent said.
Bagent also answered a question about Ben Johnson declaring him the starter early this week by saying he doesn’t care about that, either.
“I didn’t even know he did that,” Bagent said.
Bagent’s focus is where it should be, on the game.
