The Washington Wizards are integrating a few new pieces into the team, which explains why there are going to be growing pains for this squad. That could not have been more apparent than on Wednesday night, when the Wizards couldn't overcome some offensive woes en route to a 120-105 loss to Trae Young's former team, the Atlanta Hawks.

In particular, the Wizards could not get it going from beyond the arc. They made just six triples as a team out of 26 attempts (23.1%), while the Hawks made 19-of-49 from deep. Washington simply could not overcome that mathematical disadvantage, and fell to 4-4 on the season as a result.

After the game, Young pointed out what the obvious problem has been for the Wizards in the early goings of this season.

“Not enough points, obviously,” Young said, via Bijan Todd of Monumental Sports Network. “Our offense has been lacking, really, to be honest all season. Once our offense gets going, I definitely see us being a better team.”

The Wizards’ “offense has been lacking, to be honest, all season,” according to Trae Young.

What specifically has been subpar?

Through eight games, the Wizards are in the bottom-10 in the league in offensive rating, which is disappointing considering the caliber of players they have on the roster. Young certainly bears responsibility for the Wizards' subpar start on offense in this new campaign as the floor general of this squad.

The Wizards offense appears to have a hard time generating clean looks from deep, which then make it easier for opposing defenses to play them straight up. Young's production has also been much more muted compared to years past, and he has to ramp up his scoring to make this offense hum.

But at the end of the day, the Wizards will need time to figure it out. They have rookie AJ Dybantsa who's still getting his feet wet in the NBA, and head coach Brian Keefe is still tinkering with the roster to see which combinations work best. However, for the team to make good on their potential to compete for a playoff spot, there should be some urgency in that regard.
