The Baltimore Ravens needed a credible quarterback solution, and the Arizona Cardinals had a veteran they had already moved out of their plans. Their reported Jacoby Brissett trade addresses both situations, although the undisclosed compensation prevents a complete verdict.
Both teams earn provisional B+ grades for the football logic. The final price could change those assessments.
Ravens trade grade — B+
At 4-4, Baltimore still has a season worth protecting. Lamar Jackson's thumb injury and Tyler Huntley's toe injury have left the Ravens searching for stability at their most important position.
Brissett offers experience that an emergency signing or an untested rookie cannot immediately replicate. He also worked with Ravens quarterbacks coach Israel Woolfork in Arizona, giving him a familiar instructor during a difficult midseason transition.
His current production demands realistic expectations. Brissett threw for 1,719 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions before Arizona demoted him. The Ravens are acquiring a functional starting option, not a guaranteed playoff rescue.
The timing limits the immediate benefit. Rookie Joe Fagnano remains the expected starter Thursday, with Brissett positioned to help afterward. Baltimore deserves credit for responding to its injuries, provided the eventual cost reflects his limitations.
Cardinals trade grade — B+
Arizona had already made its quarterback decision. Coach Mike LaFleur named Gardner Minshew the starter and rookie Carson Beck the backup Monday, relegating Brissett to emergency third-string duties.
Trading him follows that plan. Keeping a veteran on an expiring contract in that role would offer insurance, but moving him creates an opportunity to recover value from a player the Cardinals no longer intended to start.
That is sensible management, although calling it pure profit would overstate the case. Arizona has already invested in Brissett, and the financial consequences and compensation matter when evaluating the transaction.
Arizona would also surrender experienced depth. Minshew's comeback performance vs. the Dallas Cowboys earned him the job, but it does not guarantee consistent production. Beck remains a developmental option rather than a proven replacement.
The Cardinals earn a provisional B+ for aligning their roster with their new direction, while the Ravens receive the same grade for addressing an urgent need. The undisclosed compensation will ultimately determine how well each team did.
