'They should just keep scoring runs' – Aakash Chopra on Rohit and Kohli's role in West Indies ODI series

India announced their 15-member ODI squad for the West Indies series on September 16, 2026, with Shubman Gill named captain and KL Rahul as vice-captain. The squad features the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli after a two-month break from international cricket. The three-match ODI series begins on September 27 in Thiruvananthapuram, followed by five T20 Internationals, as India continue their preparations ahead of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2027.

Cricket analyst Aakash Chopra has outlined his expectations for Rohit and Kohli during the West Indies tour. With the World Cup less than a year away, Chopra believes the returning stars carry a specific responsibility in the upcoming matches.

"The World Cup is just one year away now, and I know that if Rohit and Kohli get in, theyll score runs, win you matches, and possibly win you trophies. So, looking at it from this perspective, the only expectation from Rohit and Kohli is just this, keep scoring runs," Chopra said on JioStar.

Chopra's assessment reflects the importance of the West Indies series as a platform for India's World Cup preparations. The analyst emphasised that Rohit and Kohli's primary focus should remain on accumulating runs consistently throughout the tour. Their performances in these matches will be crucial as India build momentum towards the global tournament scheduled for 2027.

Jadeja's all-round responsibilities in the squad

Ravindra Jadeja's return to the ODI squad after last featuring in the series against New Zealand in January adds another dimension to India's preparations. The all-rounder brings experience and versatility to the middle order and bowling attack.

"Ravindra Jadeja will have to, of course, take wickets and score runs. Fielding has always been his strong suit," Chopra said.

The West Indies series also provides opportunities for other squad members to stake their claim ahead of the World Cup. With selection decisions still being finalised, every performance carries significant weight.

"Not all of them will go to South Africa. So, someone will be left out, and therefore, every time you get an opportunity, you have to grab it with both hands," Chopra said.
