The Baltimore Ravens are currently gearing up for their Week 2 matchup against the New Orleans Saints at home. The Ravens are coming off a comfortable road win over the Indianapolis Colts to open up their season, in a game in which Lamar Jackson played like a two-time MVP.

Recently, Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken, who used to be the Ravens' offensive coordinator, spoke about how he once thought Jackson would be getting a high-profile backup quarterback.

“Monken said that in 2023 the Ravens believed Mayfield was going to sign in Baltimore to be Lamar Jackson’s backup,” reported Zac Jackson of The Athletic on X, formerly Twitter.

Monken was talking about Mayfield due to the fact that the Browns are currently gearing up to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Mayfield was once thought of as a likely career backup but has since resurrected his career with the Buccaneers, recently signing a massive contract extension to keep him around long-term.

Meanwhile, the Ravens seem happy enough with their backup quarterback Tyler Huntley, who had to play several games last year due to Jackson's hamstring injury.

Ravens fans are hoping that the only time Huntley takes the field this year is in blowouts, and Jackson sure looked healthy on Sunday in Indianapolis, showing no signs of slowing down as he approaches the age of 30.

Baltimore is widely considered to be one of the favorites to come out of the AFC this year, and although the opening chunk of the season isn't the most taxing in terms of strength of schedule, there's still certainly something to be said about taking care of business against lesser competition.
