The San Francisco 49ers and Brock Purdy have been dominant through two weeks. The 2-0 team has by far the best point differential (+42) in football. Their quarterback, who has been cast the “game manager” label in the past, is looking like a superstar so far, too.
Purdy already has 492 passing yards, 45 completions, and five touchdown passes, all of which rank within in the top 10 in the entire league. Most impressively, Purdy has thrived when opposing defenses send the blitz. In fact, his EPA per pass play vs. the blitz is nearly at 1.00, which is nearly double that of second place, which just so happens to be two-time MVP Patrick Mahomes.
Purdy is able to diagnose what opposing defenses are doing and get the ball out of his hands and to his playmakers quickly. The Los Angeles Chargers and Denver Broncos, meanwhile, have struggled to get anything going when defenses send pressure.
Purdy isn't a flashy quarterback, but he has a track record of winning and is always accurate. Injuries have been San Francisco's demise in recent years, but the 49ers are relatively healthy right now, and Purdy is excelling because of it. Purdy was ranked by ClutchPoints as just the 20th-best quarterback coming into the season, but he is quickly proving why that was a severe under-ranking.
